Sesame Features in Detail

Sesame is designed to meet the needs of both the first time user and the sophisticated developer. Sesame helps you manage your information in an organized way, and makes it easy for you to access that information. A full range of customizable search and retrieval functionality is combined with flexible reports to allow you to access your information in a myriad of ways. Your data is displayed on your own custom-designed forms.

Even if you have no prior database experience, you will find Sesame easy to learn. You will be able to create working databases within a few minutes of starting out. The philosophy underpinning Sesame's approach is that designing an application should be easy, and that Sesame's more advanced features are there to help enhance, but not be a prerequisite for, creating useful applications.

Sophisticated integrated applications

Sesame has the tools to help you create complex business applications such as order entry/invoicing, contact management and scheduling systems. In an order entry application, for example, you can link your customers, products and invoice line-items to the main invoice records, and add customization so that orders can be completed simply by pointing-and-clicking on pop-up selection lists, and the invoice printed with the click of a button.

Always available menu panel

Sesame provides two ways to get a clear view of your application's structure. Forms, tasks and navigational commands can be displayed with a Menu Tree or the default Menu Buttons. No matter what menu style you choose, your tools will always be available in menu panel to the left of your form. Most functions can be accessed with either the keyboard or mouse. No more hunting through a confusing array of pulldown menus to find the task you want to perform. (The menu panel can optionally be hidden via the View menu or programming.)

Creating Applications

Sesame's easy to use, yet feature-rich Application Designer makes getting started a snap and building applications a pleasure. When designing a new form, you simply type the name of the field you want followed by a colon (:), and Sesame automatically adds it to the form. Even if you have dozens of "fields" to add to your form, you can be finished in minutes, not hours. When adding a new database, Sesame creates it automatically from the form you design.

Preview your design work

Preview mode allows you to quickly preview and test your application designs in advance of integrating them into the live application. This revolutionary approach to database management means that you can work on redesigning and enhancing your applications while others in your organization continue to use the original application.

Image support

Display image files in your database records. Sesame records can display BMP, GIF, JPG and PNG files. Images are automatically sized to fit the Image Window you specify. Sesame allows images to be visually selected as criteria when adding and searching records. You can also add "static" images - such as your company logo - to your forms and reports, along with attractive graphic lines and boxes to group your information and make your forms easier to work with.

Sesame enables you to include image files in your database records.

Batch commands at your fingertips

Batch-based operation allows you to retrieve your records once, then perform multiple operations on those same records, like Sort, Mass Update, Report, Export and Mass Delete. All the commands for these operations are right there on-screen, either in the Menu Tree to the left of your form, or in the Spec window in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.

Powerful search capabilities

The ability to search for records meeting your criteria is a core function of any database manager. Sesame offers a full set of tools to specify and adjust your retrieved records until you have exactly the records you're after. These include regular searches, additive searches, subtractive searches, drilldown searches, inverted searches, universal searches, and "find first match" searches.

Optional views of your data

Sesame's Table View option provides a spreadsheet-style view of your data. Columns can be placed in any order and resized for best viewing. You can sort records on multiple columns. Records can be edited, deleted, added and even printed from this view.

Powerful programming tools

Sesame does not require programming, it is always optional. Those with a background in Symantec's Q&A will find Sesame's SBasic programming language compatible in almost every way to Q&A's. It's a simple language that non-programmers can use. SBasic can be used in Form and Report programming and Mass Updates to perform a variety of calculations and tasks. Commands are available to alter data, affect the interface, perform external file I/O, send email, and more. SBasic includes advanced programming tools such as variables, loops, arrays and subroutines. Sesame also has an event-based macro recorder to automate repetitive tasks.

Sesame's programming tools are simple enough for beginners, yet powerful enough for professionals.

Forms within forms

Subrecords related to your main records can be displayed in either Table or Form type subforms. Sesame supports relational linking (based on matching key values), but defaults to "natural" linking, where Sesame handles all the bookkeeping for you. Sesame's forms within forms capabilities give you a comprehensive view of all your related data without having to store it all in a single database, while letting you update that data right from inside the main record.

Import/Export facilities

Sesame can Import and Export hierarchies of records. A hierarchical import will automatically create both parent records and subrecords. This is a great tool both for exporting your data to another program (like Microsoft Word) or for importing data from another relational database product. Sesame imports CSV style ASCII files. Sesame exports ASCII text files with a wide selection of Export options to customize how your exported file is formatted.

Sesame's built-in Export capability is great for exporting your data to another program (like Microsoft Word).

Record printing

Sesame can print your records to HTML, instantly creating a web page from of your form design. You can optionally print your records using a variety of other printing options, such as printing with no background, immediate printing to your printer, or allowing you to select which printer to print to. For precision printing to preprinted forms such as 1099s, W-2s, and checks, Sesame has the tools you need. You can also merge-print your Sesame data to your favorite word processor.

Reports

HTML-based reports, combined with a fast, intuitive Report Designer creates Reports that can instantly be emailed, uploaded to a web site, printed or viewed in any browser. Because Sesame reports are HTML, they can easily be imported into many popular word processors, spreadsheets and database packages. Sesame supports both columnar and free-form style reports, as well as "combination" style reports.

Client-server by design

Sesame features true client-server operation. This, combined with being cross-platform, provides for a mix-and-match ability which allows you the flexibility to make the best choice of operating system for your workstations, servers and web servers. Sesame clients running on Microsoft Windows can connect to a Sesame server running on Linux, and vice-versa. TCP/IP based networking allows you to connect to a Sesame server on the Internet as easily as if it was on your own local network.

As a cross-platform application, Sesame can be run on Microsoft Windows and Linux.

Migrating from Q&A?

Sesame is a logical migration path for those using Symantec's Q&A. The Sesame Plus edition has the ability to translate Q&A 4.0/5.0 for DOS and Q&A for Windows databases into Sesame applications. Q&A users will find that Sesame uses many of the same keystrokes, search syntax and programming language commands as Q&A.
